History of smart directions
Like the packages we handle for our clients, we’ve been on a bit of a journey these past 20 years. We’ve moved units, grown, taken on new services, hired more staff and created a legacy that we’re very proud of.

2007

It all started with a dream… Well OK, not quite. Smart Directions was initially formed as a result of two friends facing redundancy. Starting as an IT consultancy business, it took a new (some would say smarter) direction, by moving into the world of logistics. For the first 6 months we were based above a Fedex warehouse, rather conveniently. We engaged with suppliers, built the foundation of the business and began to form our identity as Smart Directions.

2008

We moved from there into a 1 room office in Audley house, Berkhamsted. For 9 months, we ran Smart Directions from that office. Although we were often so overrun with parcels while waiting for the van collections that we quickly realised it was probably time to find somewhere bigger. So from there we moved to Peacock house, and much like the name suggests – this gave us the space to stretch our metaphorical tail feathers and really show the world how beautiful we could be. More room in the office AND vehicle access – we were on the up.

2009

After 18 months, we moved to another office in the same building giving us room to store pallets, not just parcels. It was getting pretty serious, and we were able to fulfil customer requirements with an efficiency and capacity like never before!

2014

2014 is long remembered as a “supremely busy time”. We were working flat out and still struggling to keep up with the growing demand from our brilliant clients. With no room to breathe and no cover for any holidays, we realised that we needed some help.

Alongside these plans, we decided to expand our sales team. Resulting in Ian joining us that August.

The same day that he started, we moved again – this time to a much bigger site. Nothing personal…

We gained more pallet capacity as well as a fulfilment area and a loading bay. We were now ready to face both the domestic and international market.

2017

Surprise! We moved to a new warehouse again. A bigger size means greater capacity. The rate at which we were expanding was incredibly exciting. You can probably guess what happened next…

2019

We moved once more, but this one felt special. It was the warehouse we originally wanted. Much bigger than where we were, it gave us the space to really grow. And we grew! 70% in one year! Suddenly, things really started falling into place. The reputation we had built over the 12 years trading was being matched by our ability to work with anyone and everyone who wanted our services.

Present day

We’re here! And despite all of our hard work, sleepless nights and tough decisions, we’re proud to look back over the history of Smart Directions. From that office above a Fedex warehouse all those years ago to the position we find ourselves in now: Employing 13 local people, working with a number of clients domestically and internationally, along with a close network of courier partners. Smart Directions has gone from strength to strength, always maintaining the highest level of service, a firm commitment to our clients and a team that shares our values and keeps our core identity. The success we’ve seen is exciting, but so is thinking about where we’ll be in the next 17 years!
