…that each year, approximately 1,382 shipping containers are lost at sea? When we read that, we couldn’t help but snigger. Don’t worry, it’s not because we think it’s a funny number or amusing statistic. It’s just the “inner dad joke generator” that simply replies “well, where did you lose it?” or “that was careless”.
Now, you could look at that number and think “compared with the 11 million tons of freight moved successfully every year, that seems relatively insignificant”, and you might be right. Except…it isn’t insignificant to a small business owner or an expectant customer.
Is it just that bad?
No actually, it’s estimated to be even worse than that. Between Nov 2020 and Jan 2021 alone, 2,675 shipping containers were lost at sea (source : CargoStore) We’re adding a caveat for this next bit – we don’t understand the math. At all. It’s pretty embarrassing actually. The figure of 1,382 is based on three year averages, calculated over a 12 year period. Basically 80% for the global vessel container capacity. Now it makes more sense.
How the heck did we lose something that big?
Don’t worry, this isn’t a plug for Specsavers!
Each of those shipping containers boarded the vessels successfully. There are just several factors which could or did impact their ability to arrive safely in port;
- Not declaring the weight properly
- Poor packing/inadequate stowage
- Changing weather patterns
- Structural/mechanical failures
- Ship groundings
- Cost cutting
- Increased traffic
We looked at that list and started to wonder how any of them made it from A to B safely…
What about the Impact of lost shipping containers on our ecosystems?
It’s obvious that action needs to be taken, but there’s no reason to assume that these numbers will be reduced anytime soon. And, in addition to the economic inconvenience, there is an ecological one. Our fishy friends are concerned about the impact to both sea life and the fragile underwater habitats as these containers hit the sea bed. Reports of significant damage to marine life, as a result of chemical leaks and contamination, have been circulating for many years.
Therefore, the changes we need to see are by and large regulatory ones. Before boarding a vessel, containers need to be properly checked, weighed and packed. Plenty of couriers, carriers and logistics partners aim to educate customers on how to meet these requirements and observe regulations more effectively. But you have to choose the right one.
